Packaging and Transport

To get our safety products to the hands of our customers, SRBT partners with several local, national and international carriers and shipping agents, each of which are experienced and certified in safely handling and transporting our unique products

Our packages travel over land or by air, with each package having been carefully packed by our trained shipping technicians. Our packages are prepared and offered for shipment by personnel certified in the transport of dangerous goods (TDG).

The devices we manufacture contain tritium gas, so in compliance with the requirements of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s (CNSC) Packaging and Transportation of Nuclear Substances Regulations, some of our package designs have been certified by the CNSC for shipping Class 7 radioactive materials.

Packages designed to transport greater than exception quantities of tritium must be tested and confirmed to withstand a water-spray test, a free-drop test, a penetration test, and a stacking test. The contents of this package design must not leak from the package design after being subjected to each of these tests in sequence.

As an additional measure of safety, each package that contains our products is monitored for package integrity prior to being offered to our carriers for shipment by SRBT.

In 2019, SRBT safely shipped 949 shipments containing tritium gas to 20 countries, with nearly 91% of these being destined for customers in either Canada or the United States of America. Note that more than a million packages containing radioactive material are transported safely in Canada each year [source: CNSC Fact Sheet, Regulating the Packaging and Transport of Nuclear Substances in Canada].

We also must meet all requirements of our CNSC-issued operating licence, as well as the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations, the International Atomic Energy Agency’s TS-R-1 Safety Standard, and CNSC-issued regulations regarding the control of importation and exportation of nuclear substances. Shipments to other countries are completed only once approved and a required export licence has been issued to SRBT by the CNSC.

As with all of our operations, it is our company mission that SRBT packaging and transport activities are performed with safety as the number one priority.
